The aging music sensation who is currently promoting her “The Art of Letting Go” single, stopped by at a radio station where she drank champagne, talked about new music and used eternal damnation to describe her multi-million dollar gig on the Fox Network show.
Although she never mentioned Nicki Minaj, whom she battled throughout the show, Carey let it be known that she was not entirely pleased with being an Idol judge. “Honestly, I hated it,” the mother of two said, admitting to feeling deceived by the reality series.
“Here’s what it was — heaven forbid [it] look like I’m saying anything negative — honestly, I thought it was going to be a three-person panel,” she said. “They gave me a nice dangling monetary moment and I was just like, ‘OK, ya know Randy Jackson’ll be there, I’ve known him forever, he used to play bass for me, this isn’t a big deal, it’ll be nothing,’ But it wasn’t like that.”
She went on to detail what she did enjoy. “I loved the contestants, and some of them were so good, and also really good people, you could tell. It was disappointing that they would — for political reasons — not put people through. I’m like, ‘I don’t have to do this,’ I would prefer to just put this person in the studio, record a record with them, or tell another producer, like, ‘Yo, you should produce this artist’… but that’s the way it is.”
When asked to choose between making music and judging the singing competition, she picked the former. “I like being in the studio better. I go on my own tours, etcetera, so we’re going back to that.”
