Pope Benedict XVI's Final Speech

VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Benedict XVI promised his "unconditional reverence and obedience" to his successor in his final words to cardinals Thursday, a poignant and powerful farewell delivered hours before he becomes the first pope in 600 years to resign. In an unexpected speech inside the Vatican's frescoed Clementine Hall, the pontiff appeared to be trying to defuse concerns about possible conflicts arising from the peculiar situation of having both a reigning pope and a retired one. He also gave a final set of instructions to the "princes" of the church who will elect his successor, urging them to be united as they huddle to choose the 266th leader of the world's 1.2 billion Catholics. "May the College of Cardinals work like an orchestra, where diversity — an expression of the universal church — always works toward a higher and harmonious agreement," he said. It was seen as a clear reference to the deep internal divisions that have come to the fore in recent months following the leaks of sensitive Vatican documents that exposed power struggles and allegations of corruption inside the Vatican. The moment was as unique as Benedict's decision to quit, with the 85-year-old pope, wearing his crimson velvet cape and using a cane, bidding farewell to his closest advisers and the cardinals themselves bowing to kiss his fisherman's ring for the last time. Some seemed to choke up at that moment, but the scene seemed otherwise almost normal, with cardinals chatting on the sidelines waiting their turn to say goodbye. Benedict said he would pray for the cardinals in coming days as they discuss the issues facing the church, the qualities needed in a new pope and prepare to enter into the secret conclave to elect him. "Among you is also the future pope, whom I today promise my unconditional reverence and obedience," Benedict said in his final audience. Benedict's decision to live at the Vatican in retirement, be called "emeritus pope" and "Your Holiness" and to wear the white cassock associated with the papacy has deepened concerns about the shadow he might cast over the next papacy. But Benedict has tried to address those worries over the past two weeks, saying that once retired he would be "hidden from the world" and living a life of prayer. In his final speech in St. Peter's Square on Wednesday, he said he wasn't returning to private life exactly, but rather to a new form of service to the church through prayer. Shortly before 5 p.m. Thursday, Benedict will leave the palace for the last time as pontiff, head to the helipad at the top of the hill in the Vatican gardens and fly to the papal retreat at Castel Gandolfo south of Rome. There, at 8 p.m. sharp, Benedict will become the first pontiff in 600 years to resign. The doors of the palazzo will shut and the Swiss Guards will go off duty, their service protecting the head of the Catholic Church over — for now. And on Monday, the cardinals are expected to begin meeting to set the date for the conclave. Benedict's decision has been met for the most part with praise and understanding. Cardinals, Vatican officials and ordinary Catholics have rallied around him in acknowledgment of his frail state and the church's need for a strong leader. But Sydney Cardinal George Pell has caused a stir by openly saying the resignation has been "slightly destabilizing" for the church. In an interview with Australia's ABC radio, Pell noted that Benedict himself had acknowledged the shift in tradition; Benedict said Wednesday that he appreciated his decision was not only serious but "a novelty" for the church.

Ghanaian Footballer John Paintsil Arrested for Stabbing Wife

A Ghanaian international footballer, John Paintsil has been arrested by the Legon Police in Accra for allegedly stabbing his wife, Richlove, in the eye on Friday afternoon. According to Goal.com, Paintsil was confronted by his wife following rumours he slept with some prostitutes during the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in South Africa. The allegation was first made by football enthusiast and social commentator Appiah Kofi popularly known as Appiah Stadium during a radio interview. Appiah alleged that the veteran defender was responsible for bringing women to the Black Stars camp to have sexual intercourse with them and this culminated in the team’s poor output at the tournament. Paintsil, however, denied the allegation and threatened to drag Appiah Stadium to court to clear his name. Goal.com further reports that his wife, Richlove, questioned Paintsil on several occasions since the issue broke. However, he lost his temper on Friday and attacked his wife stabbing her in the eye. The former West Ham defender is also reported to have attacked a neighbour who attempted to rescue his wife, according to police. “The wife scaled a wall to a neighbour’s house for protection and immediately, John Paintsil also pursued her, came to the neighbour’s house, gave him some slaps and threatened to shoot him. That scared the gentleman who rushed to the police to lodge a complaint,” a witness told BBC Sport. The wife is said to be unconscious after sustaining serious injuries to her eye and is currently at a hospital receiving treatment. Paintsil, 31, is a member of the Ghana team that finished fourth at the Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa.

Nobody Can Defeat Us” – Nigerian First Lady Says

The First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan has made a veiled reference to the merger of main opposition parties, which was consummated with formation of All Progressive Congress (APC), saying it is no threat to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Mrs Jonathan made the remark in Abuja at the presentation of the PDP Women-in-Power 2013 calendar. She appreciated the PDP Woman Leader, Ambassador Kema Chikwe for her initiative in presenting the calendar which she said was a fund raising event to support the transformation agenda of Mr. President through promoting empowerment of the women at the grassroots. The First Lady said: "Nigerian women, especially women of PDP, this is the biggest party, no party can beat us. Let them try; what we talk, we do it. PDP isn't shaken. We aren't afraid, let one hundred parties come together, they cannot defeat us." She, however, admonished women to stand by one another to face the challenges facing the womenfolk. "Once you do that, nothing can shake us. We are more in number than them. Let us speak with one voice." During the event, the woman leader and a member of the PDP National Working Committee, Kema Chikwe declared that she was confident that President Jonathan would pick the party's presidential ticket in 2015 and ultimately retain his office at the Presidential Villa irrespective of the controversy over an alleged pact between the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors and President Jonathan restricting the latter to spend one term in office. Dignitaries present at the event include Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Anyin Pius Anyim, the First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan and Deputy National Chairman of the PDP, Dr Sam Sam Jaja. Other members of the PDP NWC in attendance were Alhaji Bala Kaoje and Alhaji Fatai Adewole, the PDP National Treasurer and National Auditor, respectively. Ambassador Chikwe noted that women in the party were confident that President Jonathan would increase their representation in the federal cabinet and the legislature to 50 percent if given the party ticket for 2015 presidential election. "We need to start moving fast to prepare women for future elections. Until we elect 35 percent or more of women in the legislature, the impact of our progress will not be complete. We know of course that next dispensation will attract possibly PDP female governors and more deputy governors. We are even more confident that when President Goodluck Jonathan returns in 2015, women would be talking about 50 percent, no longer 35 percent. As we give him unequivocal, undiluted, unreserved and unlimited support and as we march with him to 2015, PDP women will reach the promised land. News Source: http://m.naij.com/news/25140.html

No New Church on Kaduna Campus "Vice Chancellor" Says

A security operative in Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, Kaduna State, has confirmed to Sahara Reporters that Vice Chancellor Abdullahi Mustapha's refusal to allow a Catholic Chapel at the Kongo Campus is creating tension between the Christian community and the management. Discussions over the building of a new Church on Kongo campus has ongoing been on for years, and the Christian community in the university is accusing the management of favouritism on the grounds that there are several Mosques on the campus and that it has never denied the Muslim community permission to construct a new one. The security operative said, "As it is now, there is tension because of the development and we have forwarded our security report to our superiors for prompt action." In a letter dated February 18, 2013, addressed to the Catholics and the Christian community, Professor Mustapha said, "there will be no more new Churches on the Kongo Campus", and asked the Christian community to arrange to utilize the existing chapel. The university is yet to respond to the issue in the media, but the Christian community is understood to have formally alerted the Kaduna State government and the security agencies of the latest developments

Iranians Paid Me To Kill IBB, Dasuki Confess

A Nigerian Islamic scholar has told how an insurgent group based in Iran contracted him to spy on and assassinate prominent Nigerians including former military president General Ibrahim Babangida and former Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Ibrahim Dasuki as well as American and Jewish citizens. The State Security Service, SSS, yesterday paraded Mallam Abdullahi Mustapha Berende, a 50 year old Islamic cleric from Kwara State, who was tracked down by the service operatives while he and his lieutenants were gathering valuable information for the Iranian insurgents. But for the keen alertness of operatives of SSS the suspect, a Shiite Islamic Sect scholar in Ilorin, Kwara State, would have carried his plot to assassinate former President Ibrahim Babangida and former Sultan of Sokoto, Ibrahim Dasuki in order to cause havoc in the Western part of the country. The Shiite leader, along with three of his accomplices, were said to be collaborating with some unnamed Iranians, known to be operating a high profile international terrorist network, to carry out the killings. The suspects were also said to have been plotting against and spying on American, Isreali and some other Western countries' interests in the country and had plotted to attack such facilities. Berenda relocated from Ilorin to Lagos and with money running into several millions gotten from the Iranian insurgents planned to expand his tentacles to other South West states. Briefing newsmen on the development, deputy director (Public Relations) of the SSS, Marilyn Ogar, explained that for six months, the service was on the trail of the suspects so as to determine their probable course of action and to stop them from executing their plans. Berende, who looked sombre and forlorn when he was brought in before newsmen, admitted having carried out the acts, but pleaded for forgiveness and leniency. According to him, "I regret what happened. It is embarrassing to me and everyone around me. I still plead for forgiveness; the whole nation and my family should forgive me and I really regret my actions. When people who are not known to you display friendship, one should be careful because you may not know the person's motives. There are people out there hunting for people to exploit and use to achieve their objectives. Source: http://m.naij.com/news/24842.html

Jonathan approves N384bn severance package for PHCN workers

President Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday approved the sum of N384bn for the payment of severance benefits to employees of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria who will be disengaged from the services of the company. This was in fulfilment of the agreement reached between the labour unions in the power sector and the Federal Government during a recent peace talk brokered by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Pius Anyim. Controversies about the payment of the severance package, the amount to be paid and the number of beneficiaries have been core issues hindering the privatisation of power firms in the country. About 50,000 PHCN workers and 4,000 whose employment has not been regularised will be paid off from the amount to pave the way for the full privatisation of the successor companies of PHCN. The implication of this is that the workers that will be absorbed by the new owners of the successor companies will operate under new conditions of service in line with agreement with Labour. The ministers of Labour and Productivity, Chief Emeka Wogu; and Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, disclosed the President’s approval to State House correspondents in Abuja on Wednesday. Wogu said the Federal Government would spend N384bn on the severance package, which payment will start on Thursday (today). The minister said the payment would finally put an end to labour issues in the power sector. He said, “I want to inform you that the agreed benefits accruing to the staff of PHCN in the last negotiation between government and the labour unions have been approved by President Goodluck Jonathan. “Payment of the agreed sum will commence immediately and that brings to an end the labour issues relating to the non-payment of benefits. “So, we enjoin labour unions in the power sector to work closely with the Ministry of Power in the payment of these benefits as agreed. The process will commence tomorrow (today) and I want to assure them that this brings to an end the labour issues in the sector. “This payment is only for PHCN staff and in determining who should benefit, labour and government conducted a biometric exercise. The number of people benefiting is clearly defined by this agreement. “The total package is approximately N384bn in full payment of all outstanding benefits that we agreed upon. It will be done within the best principle of transparency and accountability.” Nebo expressed the hope that the approval of the payment would further encourage the PHCN workers to continue to serve patriotically and ensure that no hitches were recorded in government’s efforts to realise its power sector roadmap. He said, “We are very grateful to the staff of PHCN for all that they have done to make sure that power is available all over the country. We do hope that they will continue to serve patriotically to ensure that no hitches are put in place in the realisation of the entire power sector roadmap. “We want to make sure that eventually, Nigerians get uninterrupted power supply and that is exactly what the roadmap for the power sector addresses.” by Olalekan Adetayo, Abuja http://www.punchng.com correspondent

Jim1-Oluwa T'she Funmi

In the recent times  we have been receiving all sorts of musics except Gospel. This time is a Gospel song from Jim1 titled "Oluwa T'she Funmi".
Jimi1 real name Emelike Emeka, is a Port Harcourt based Nigerian artiste and producer, though presently not in Nigeria. He started playing the piano at age 5, after finishing from a children’s piano school he was sent to by his mother because of the love and flare he showed for music at a very tender age. She also bought him a drum so he could stop using the tables in the house(lol). He grew up developing his skills and started singing at age 10.From children’s choirs to playing for churches, he never looked back and so he decided to start producing and recording. He worked behind the scenes and underground for many years, but presently is with Victoria Oyiya Records. Download free and share with friends. Thanks.

Rock worth 40 times the cost of gold

MOSCOW (Reuters) - A meteor that exploded over Russia's Ural mountains and sent fireballs blazing to earth has set off a rush to find fragments of the space rock which hunters hope could fetch thousands of dollars a piece. Friday's blast and ensuing shockwave shattered windows, injured almost 1,200 people and caused about $33 million worth of damage, said local authorities. It also started a "meteorite rush" around the industrial city of Chelyabinsk, 1,500 km (950 miles) east of Moscow, where groups of people have started combing through the snow and ice. One amateur space enthusiast estimated chunks could be worth anything up to 66,000 roubles ($2,200) per gram - more than 40 times the current cost of gold. "The price is hard to say yet ... The fewer meteorites that are recovered, the higher their price," said Dmitry Kachkalin, a member of the Russian Society of Amateur Meteorite Lovers. Meteorites are parts of a meteor that have fallen to earth. Scientists at the Urals Federal University were the first to announce a significant find - 53 small, stony, black objects around Lake Chebarkul, near Chelyabinsk, which tests confirmed were small meteorites. The fragments were only 0.5 to 1 cm (0.2 to 0.4 inches) across but the scientists said larger pieces may have crashed into the lake, where a crater in the ice about eight meters (26 feet) wide opened up after Friday's explosion. "We just completed tests and confirm that the pieces of matter found by our experts around Lake Chebarkul are really meteorites," said Viktor Grokhovsky, a scientist with the Urals Federal University and the Russian Academy of Sciences. "These are classified as ordinary chondrites, or stony meteorites, with an iron content of about 10 percent," he told RIA news agency. He did not say whether the fragments had told his team anything about the origins of the meteor, which the U.S. space agency NASA estimated was 55 feet across before entering Earth's atmosphere and weighed about 10,000 tons. The main fireball streaked across the sky at a speed of about 30 km (19 miles) per second, according to Russian space agency Roscosmos, before crashing into the snowy wastes. TREASURE HUNTERS More than 20,000 people took part in search and clean-up operations at the weekend in and around Chelyabinsk, which is in the heart of a region packed with industrial military plants. Many other people were in the area just hoping to find a meteorite after what was described by scientists as a once-in-a-century event. Residents of a village near Chelyabinsk searched the snowy streets, collecting stones they hoped would prove to be the real thing. But not all were ready to sell. "I will keep it. Why sell it? I didn't have a rich lifestyle before, so why start now?" a woman in a pink woolen hat and winter jacket, clutching a small black pebble, told state television Rossiya-24. The Internet filled quickly with advertisements from eager hunters hoping to sell what they said were meteorites - some for as little as 1,000 roubles ($33.18). The authenticity of the items was hard to ascertain. One seller of a large, silver-hued rock wrote in an advertisement on the portal Avito.ru: "Selling an unusual rock. It may be a piece of meteorite, it may be a bit of a UFO, it may be a piece of a rocket!" ($1 = 30.1365 Russian roubles) (Additional reporting by Ludmila Danilova and Gabriela Baczinska, Writing by Alissa de Carbonnel, Editing by Timothy Heritage and Andrew Heavens)
