Pastor Shot And Killed During Sermon

A Louisiana pastor was fatally shot as he preached to a crowd of more than 60 during a revival service and a suspect has been arrested, law enforcement officials said Saturday.

The shooting at about 8:20 p.m. Friday was at Tabernacle of Praise Worship Center in Lake Charles, Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Kim Myers said Saturday. Sixty-five people were inside at the time, including the victim’s wife, said Chief Deputy Stitch Guillory.

Deputies have no information on a motive or on whether the preacher and suspect knew each other, Myers said.

Myers said Pastor Ronald J. Harris Sr. was shot twice by the gunman. The man went into the church while Harris was preaching and “walked up to him and shot him at close range,” Myers said. The suspect shot him again when Harris fell to the floor.

The pastor was pronounced dead at the scene.

Woodrow Karey, 53, of Lake Charles is charged with second-degree murder and was held in the parish jail Saturday, Myers said. Karey’s bond has been set at $1 million.

The gunman left the church, but Myers said Karey called the sheriff’s office and surrendered.

Myers said after picking up Karey, deputies found two guns in a wooded area – one was a shotgun, the other a .22-caliber pistol.

Myers said Karey has no known criminal history.

Myers said deputies were “interviewing everybody who was there at the church.”

Family members who answered the telephone Saturday at the Harris home in Lake Charles said there would be no comment. There was no answer at a telephone listing for Karey or at Tabernacle of Praise.

Ejiro Okurame has definitely carved a place for herself as a force to reckon with in Nollywood. In this interview with CHRISTIAN AGADIBE, she opens up on her career, lesbianism experience and her dreams among other issues. Excerpts:

What’s the secret to your success?

It’s been challenging but I give the glory to God because He has been faithful. It’s not been easy trying to climb the ladder of success. You encounter all kinds of challenges. A lot of people will love you and a lot would hate you. But so far I give Glory to God; I thank God for being there. He has always been my strength. I always run to Him when I have challenges.

What’s been your most challenging role?

All the movies I have done are very challenging. Basically, I could say that movies like Warri Girl and Tough Wife were the most challenging.

What are you currently working on?

I am working on a very big project, which I don’t want to talk about just yet. That’s why I have refused to grant interviews for the past two years. I am working on something very serious; it should be ready by the end of the year.

Outside of acting, who is Ejiro?

Ejiro is just a normal girl from Delta State. I am the last from a family of seven. My parents are in Lagos.

How do you unwind?

I derive a lot of joy from sleeping at home when I am not working. It is not that I don’t club or go to events but I try to be selective. My kind of work involves a lot and is very challenging. Sometimes when I am not working I cook; I love food a lot.

 

How was your growing up like?

Growing up was normal. I had a very healthy relationship with my siblings. When we were in primary school, we always competed against each other on who would make first or second, though my elder sister was a class ahead of me. My father encouraged us and helped to direct us on what to do and what not to do. He used the Bible to teach us about life.

Were you born with a silver spoon?

I am an average child; it’s a combination of both worlds. I am from a comfortable home; we are not too rich and not poor.

Did your parents support you when you opted for acting?

Funny enough they didn’t know I was coming into the industry and I did not study Theater Arts. All I have is a Diploma in Public Relations from Ogun State University and a BSC in Theology from Lagos State University. I graduated in 2000. When I finished, I started a little business around my house. From there, I met a friend and the rest is history. I didn’t tell my parents until they started seeing me in movies and when they did, they encouraged me; they were happy with me. Nobody tried to discourage me; even neighbours were supportive.

What was your experience the first time you faced the camera?

I give kudos to Rita Dominic because she was there for me. I never knew her but the first time I got on set, I was missing my lines and the director wanted to throw me out, I was anxious and nervous. The set was intimidating. We had Rita Dominic, Nobert Young and a lot of big stars. Little wonder I was missing my lines. An actress got pissed off because of my delivery but Rita didn’t take it like that. She was actually showing me so much love and kindness. Till tomorrow, I respect her for that so I try to encourage the younger ones around me any way I could.

What was your motivation in spite of those challenges?

What motivated me was passion because when I was in the university studying Public Relations, I really wanted to go into Mass Communication but there was no opportunity for me.

What’s your assessment of Nollywood?

It has created jobs and provided food for many families. Nollywood has taking a lot of people to many places and opened a lot of doors. It has built many career men and women. Although, we still have some challenges here and there but we are doing our best.

Were you sexually harassed as an upcoming actress?

I didn’t set myself up to be sexually harassed. However, the issue of s*xual harassment is in every organization not just Nollywood. It happens everywhere.

What’s the craziest thing a fan did to you?

I think it’s when I acted a movie called, My Love & Sorrow in which I was cheating on my husband. A while later, I was shooting a movie at Abule Ado in Lagos, I had scarcely parked my car when I saw children gathered around me shouting, ‘why did you kill your husband and why did you cheat on him?’ Before I knew it, they were throwing stones at me! I was really embarrassed!

Aside that, some fans would want to call you in the night maybe around 11pm when you are with your partner and it could cause confusion. But thank God I have someone who is very understanding.

So, you are in a relationship now?

Yes, I am seeing my boyfriend.

What attracted you to him?

His composure and understanding makes him different. Generally, he is that kind of a man that understands the nature of my work. If I want to go anywhere, all he needs is for me to tell him where I am going to work.

You are not getting younger. When is he taking you down the aisle?

You will get the invite soon; I am old enough to get married and have children.

What kept you long from getting married?

What kept me long was that I had not found the right man.

Was it in Nollywood that you lost your virginity?

(Laughter) No comment bros, no comment. When did you lose your own?

What is your view about lesbianism in the industry?

I think it is demonic. I won’t say much about it because a lot of people are involved. The industry needs divine intervention so God can erase such people from the industry. It has eaten deep and it is affecting us. That’s why we need to seek the presence of God. Lesbianism is a sign of the end of time.

Have you been a victim before?

No, not really. I think it is when you give room for these things that they occur. I was in Abuja for a particular event when a lady asked me to sit on her laps. I was like ‘what, sit on your laps! For what?’ I left and got my own chair.

In the next five years, where would we see Ejiro?

In the next five years, I should be in my husband’s house with my kids. I should have my own production outfit too.

What is your regret so far?

I could say that my regret is that I didn’t start early in the industry. If I had started early when Nollywood was established, I would have achieved a lot more and impacted a lot more on the younger generation.

What’s your advice for youths looking up to you?

A lot of people have come to me asking for advice on how to join Nollywood and I tell them, ‘don’t because the industry is terrible now.’ I won’t advise anybody to come in right now. But if you insist, you should be prepared to train. It is sad that they take advantage of all these young girls including extorting money from them, sleeping with them and even molesting them. It is terrible so I won’t advise anyone to come in now.

Why I Will Never Marry – Oprah Winfrey

Talk show host, and one of the world’s most influential women, Oprah Winfrey has revealed why she will never, ever marry her longtime partner Stedman – despite friend, Tina Turner demanding she walk down the aisle.

Oprah and Tina have been friends for years, with Oprah attending the singer’s wedding back in July.

But the talk show queen says she has come to the conclusion that such a union is just not for her.

When asked if she would leave earth as a “never-married” woman, Oprah made her feelings very clear.

“Yes,” she told Access Hollywood. “Yeah, I think that’s my final answer.”

Tina exchanged vows with German music producer Erwin Bach at Lake Zurich, Switzerland. And the romantic affair made Oprah wonder if she and partner Stedman Graham should tie the knot.

“I think that it’s interesting that you would ask it because I thought about it again at Tina Turner’s wedding,” Oprah revealed.

“Because Tina was like, ‘Oprah, you need to do this. You need to do it.’ I was just thinking, ‘Well, OK, would things really be different?’ And no, I don’t think so.”

Oprah admits if she and Stedman had got married, they probably wouldn’t have lasted.

According to Oprah, her relationship with Stedman is so unusual it wouldn’t have fit within the confines of such a union.

“If you ever interviewed him, he would tell you that had we married, we would not be together today,” Oprah said of Stedman. “Because he’s a traditional man and this is a very untraditional relationship.”

Oprah goes on to explain that she couldn’t be a wife because the word holds responsibilities she doesn’t feel capable of handling.

“I think it’s acceptable as a relationship, but if I had the title ‘wife,’ I think there would be other expectations for what a wife is and what a wife does. First of all, you’ve got to come home sometimes,” Oprah laughed.

D’banj, Fails to show up at Hennessy Artistry Club Tour

Popular entertainer and Hennessy Artistry 2013 headliner, Kokomaster Dbanj, was strangely absent from his debut Lagos club appearance, which held on Saturday, September 21st at Rhapsody’s Lounge in Victoria Island, Lagos.

Dbanj, who was in London at the time, had been scheduled to kick-start the show alongside soul diva, Seyi Shay and rap duo, Show Dem Camp.

D’banj could not immediately return from his trip due to delays with his flight.

The entertainer was however greatly represented by supporting act, Olamide who delivered an outstanding performance to the delight of guests present.

Blackberry Posts $965m Loss In Its Second Quarter

BlackBerry said on Friday that it lost $965 million in the past quarter, confirming preliminary figures showing a rapidly eroding picture for the Canadian smartphone maker.

The company, which had given a preliminary estimate for its second fiscal quarter results, acknowledged the figures were weak, but said it hopes for a turnaround with a planned $4.7 billion buyout, which would take the firm private.

“We are very disappointed with our operational and financial results this quarter and have announced a series of major changes to address the competitive hardware environment and our cost structure,” said Thorsten Heins, president and chief executive.

He added that the company is putting in place “the necessary changes to create the best business model” for its ailing product.

“We understand how some of the activities we are going through create uncertainty, but we remain a financially strong company with $2.6 billion in cash and no debt,” Heins said.

“We are focused on our targeted markets, and are committed to completing our transition quickly in order to establish a more focused and efficient company.”

Revenue for quarter ending August 31 was $1.6 billion, down 49 per cent from $3.1 billion in the previous quarter and down 45 per cent from $2.9 billion in the same quarter of fiscal 2013.

The company said it shipped some 5.9 million smartphones in the quarter, which is less than what Apple sold in the past weekend in the global launch of its new iPhones.

BlackBerry has said it will cut its workforce by some 40 per cent as it seeks to restructure the company.

Colin Gillis at the research firm BCG said the results were “startling weak “ and may signal the end for BlackBerry.

“While we applaud the decision to focus on retooling the company into a niche enterprise focused business, it seems years too late,” he said in a note to clients.

“Just as the consumer business has crumbled, the enterprise business is also in decay in our opinion. Given the negative news flow from the company, enterprise customers are likely to shy away from committing to a struggling platform.”

BlackBerry was just a few years ago considered the leader in smartphones, but has rapidly lost ground to Apple and other manufacturers, mainly using the Google Android operating system.

BlackBerry announced this week that it signed a letter of intent with a group led by Fairfax Financial Holdings Limited, which has offered to acquire the company.

Fairfax, a Canadian firm headed by billionaire Prem Watsa, is already BlackBerry’s largest shareholder with approximately 10 per cent of its shares.

Watsa resigned from BlackBerry’s board in August when it announced a search for a suitor.

Under the proposed BlackBerry-Fairfax deal the consortium would offer $9 for each outstanding share, and Fairfax would contribute its own shares in the transaction.

A firm deal, once due diligence is completed, is expected by November 4. It also hinges on the consortium obtaining financing.

BlackBerry still has some 70 million subscribers worldwide, but most of these are using older handsets, with the newer devices on the BlackBerry 10 platform failing to gain traction.

According to research firm IDC, BlackBerry’s global market share was just 2.9 per cent in the second quarter, the lowest since the firm began tracking.

Because BlackBerry has some $2.6 billion cash on hand, the Fairfax offer is worth around $2 billion for the value of the enterprise, analysts point out.

While BlackBerry’s newest smartphones have not sold well, analysts say its software and services are strong, especially for device management for companies with a need for strong security. [AFP]

Ajebutter22 – Hire Killer
